Summary

A new government

Previous prime ministers of the Labour Party, Tony Blair and Grodon Brown replaced by a partnership agreed on after intense negotiations between Conservative Party lead by David Cameron and the Liberal Democrats after an election of a new British government with the results of Conservatives winning 36% of the votes, Labour 29% and the Lib Dems 23%, the rest were shared by smaller parties. For the first time since 1974 no party had a hung parliament. Usually being either the Conservatives or Labour, The Lib Dems are now part of the government for the first time since WWII ended in 1945. Both are common but the free market, privatization and low taxation are favored by Conservatives whereas Labour has commited to greater social and economic equality. The country is divided into 650 constituencies, each has a MP. Mostly won by Conservative or Labour candidates, 650 seperate local elections happen, the Lib Dems are second, but only the winning party is represented in parliament. Lib Dems state unfairness of electoral system, demanding more proportional system. Finally, the Conservatives agree to an ‘alternative vote’ system for future general elections.  (insideout.net,2010)

Education in Qatar and the UnitedKingdom

Schools and how they operate differentiate between each country and another. If we were to compare between the education in Qatar and the UK, there's definitely a huge difference between them.

Children entering school in the UK would most probably be accepted into the school between the ages of 4 or 5 whereas in Qatar private schools accept students from the early age of 3 years old and 4 to 5 for public schools.

Mentioning private and public schools, public schools in Qatar are owned and run by the government, the curriculum is mostly taught in Arabic and much simpler and straight forward than private schools. When graduating,  its all about the percentage you get, that's all. Where in private schools, IGCSEs are taken in year 10 and 11, then the students chooses between AS, IB and whether to continue to A levels or not. In the UK they'd study for 13 years and finish their A levels. This means in the UK the length of education is one year longer.

"The school education in Qatar is controlled largely by two bodies – The Ministry of Education and Supreme Education Council. There are also the privately managed independent schools in Qatar. Majority of these schools are managed and run for English speaking western expatriates, although local families too, send their children to these schools. The schools are for children of American, British, German, French, Pakistanis, Indians, Egyptians, Japanese, Filipinos, and several other nationalities" (Onlineqatar, 2005).

Nationalities in the school differ according mainly on the abilities of the student. From a stereotypical point of view,  someone that is good in English and speaks it fluently would most probably be in a private school, those who are weaker in English would be in public ones.

Holidays in Qatar are mainly Ramadan, Eids, Spring, national and independent days and half terms. In addition, Christmas and Easter holidays in private schools. They are the same in the UK although without Ramadan and eid obviously.

The people of Britain

Britain is known as the United kingdom . England,Wales, Northern Ireland and scotland are the four nations that make up Britain. In Britain there are different types of nationalities around the four nations such as; Indian, Somalian, Arabs and Japanese people.

People who live in England are called British people. People who live in Wales are called " welsh " they have there own language other than English. "Scottish" people are those who live in Scotland and last but not least " Dutch " is a name given for those people who live in Nether Ireland. In my opinion i don't think british people will be offended if they were called british because this is who they are.

"National Symbols are defined as the symbols or icons of  a national community ( such England) , used to represent that community in a way that unites its people. This unity is based on a common pride, which is incited by different represenattions; i.e visual (e.g.the national flower), verbal (e.g. the national anthem) and iconic (e.g. the flag). These symbols are then used in national events and celebrations, inspiring patriotism as they include every member of that particular community , regardless of color or creed" (Kweet, 2012).
